LAST WEEK OF AVAILABILITY FOR POPLARS AND WILLOWS
Greetings landlubbers
As a customer of Matatoa Pole Nursery you may be interested in more availability for planting this season.
Some of these poles and stakes have previously been shown as SOLD OUT due to having to make sure our commitments were covered when we harvested.
We can now offer the following if you missed out on any this season.
THESE ARE ONLY AVAILABLE FOR THE NEXT TWO WEEKS :

Time is running out to get these into the ground. Ideally they would be planted in June/July but with all the rain that we have had this season it still is a perfect time to get them in the ground in most places.
Listed below are descriptions and a list of the species that we can currently supply and the grades and prices available. We have also included some links to informative sites for more information.
Poles and Stakes are supplied in bundles to your requirements. They have all been cut to specific lengths and all side branches pruned off. Your job is to get the stake or pole into the ground (the right way up of course - if you are unsure of this then the first thing is to make sure the new nodes are pointing upwards - generally the pole or stake is tapered to a greater or lesser degree, being thicker at the bottom end). From there when spring comes the material will take root in the soil and produce new branches above ground.
If you are planting POLES (3m, or 2.5m) you can purchase a DYNEX SLEEVE to slip over the top of the pole once it is in the ground to protect it from grazing animals. This sleeve will eventually split down the perforated line as the trunk develops in diameter (about 4 years). Please note: Stock pressure in the first year needs to be closely monitored as stock (largely cattle) can be detrimental during this establishment phase, to the point of excluding cattle completely for the first season.
Poles and stakes can be planted by digging, drilling or ramming. If drilling a narrow diameter auger can be used, followed by backfilling and ramming up. If driving or hammering into the ground, depending on the soil type or moisture level, a pilot hole driven with a pointed bar may be necessary prior to driving the pole or stake in. Making a diagonal cut on the bottom of the stake will also aid penetration. Trim the top back once planted if any splitting or damage occurs when hammering in.

| POPULUS VERONESE (P. deltoides x nigra)
 A straight stemmed, narrow crowned tree. Good drought and wind tolerance. Veronese makes a good conservation tree where minimal shade is required.
Very vigorous poplar with smaller leaves and a better tolerance to dry, hillier country and wind (including salt wind) than most of the other poplars. Autumn colour.
An ideal tree as a paddock specimen, a large tree lined driveway, shelter or for coppicing for firewood. Used extensively for hillside erosion control. Grows to approximately 10m x 5m.
Moderate susceptibility to rust & leaf spot disease in areas of high humidity and heavy dews, but growth not affected, particularly in areas with low summer humidity. Moderate palatability to possums. Female. Basic density 340kg/m3. Main uses: soil conservation, shelter belts, plantation forestry.
|  POPULUS KAWA (P. deltoides x yunnanensis)
A balsam hybrid, Kawa is a faster growing & better formed tree than Pop. Yunnannensis but has most of the same attractive features. Best suited to moist slopes or gullies that don’t get excessive wind. Moderate to low palatability to possums, male clone. Kawa is one of the densest poplars at up to 361 kg/m3 making it the leading timber producing poplar. New leaf emerges in late September with greenish/bronze foliage. Kawa keeps its foliage longer than the x euamericana hybrids and has stunning autumn colouration. Main uses: soil conservation & forestry.
Populus Kawa is also excellent as a drive liner, shelter, screen or shade tree, coppicing firewood, fodder source or erosion control.
| POPULUS SHINSEI (Populus nigra ‘x Populus maximowiczii)
 Populus Shinsei leafs up earlier in spring than most poplars. Has low palatibility to possums.
‘Shinsei’ is resistant to leaf rusts and leaf anthracnose It has medium tolerance to wind.
Shinsei is recommended for general soil conservation purposes and is particularly suited to moist inland sites. Narrow crowned tree without heavy limbs. Should reach approximately 16m in ten years

| POPULUS YUNNANENSIS (Chinese Poplar)
Populus Yunnanensis is an attractive medium to large tree with glossy dark green leaves that are retained until well into winter.
It is particularly noticeable for its healthy disease-free foliage and strong growth characteristics. It is unpalatable to possums and has rough bark which makes it less palatable to stock and suited to open planting in hill country. It is slower growing than its hybrids, Populus Kawa and Populus Toa. Ultimately it grows into a larger spreading tree with dense foliage.
| | | SALIX TANGOIO - Tangoio Willow (NZ 1040 Salix matsudana x alba)
 Salix Tangoio has a high wind tolerance and very good low branch retention. A dense moderately spreading crown with light green leaves similar to Salix matsudana. An excellent farm and horticultural shelter which responds well to mechanical trimming. Has an advantage of early leafing into spring as compared to poplars. In terms of hill country siting, it is best suited to planting on moist mid slopes rather than dry upper slopes. Shows good drought tolerance. However it is palatable to possums. Female clone. Growth rate very fast. 15-20m.

| Salix Moutere (NZ1184 Salix matsudana x alba)
 Salix Moutere A tree willow, with straight stem form - Excellent shelter species with blue-green foliage. Crown is dense & reasonably narrow. Foliage retained until end of May. Hardy on exposed sites.
This clone possesses good wind tolerance and is suitable for shelter. Being a male clone it doesn’t seed, so is suitable for general soil conservation planting and also for planting near watercourses without risk of spread. It has poor tolerance to possums, so may suffer from browsing damage where possums are prevalent. Moutere is of value for riverbank stabilisation and farm shelter where possums are under control . 15-20m.
